Research that answers a decision

Most commissioned research fails quietly. Not because the fieldwork was poor, but because nobody agreed at the outset what decision the study was meant to inform — so the report arrives comprehensive, interesting, and impossible to act on.

We start the other way round. Before any design work, we establish what you would do differently depending on the answer, what evidence would settle it, and the threshold at which you would actually move. If no answer would change the decision, we will say so rather than sell you the study. That conversation costs nothing and occasionally saves a great deal.

Behind that sits fifteen years of research and academic work across the Gulf — designing studies, running fieldwork, and working inside the region’s research culture rather than commuting into it.

Our services

Ad-hoc custom studies

Bespoke research for high-stakes decisions where syndicated data will not do — pricing a product with no market precedent, concept and proposition testing, market sizing where no published figure exists, commercial due diligence, and stakeholder research among small, senior, hard-to-reach populations.

Competitive intelligence

Share estimation built bottom-up where no reliable published data exists, pricing architecture, capability and intent mapping, market-entry analysis, and continuous early-warning monitoring. Gathered only from legitimately available sources — which is both the ethical position and the commercially sound one, because intelligence obtained improperly cannot be cited in a board paper.

Consumer science & segmentation

Segmentations tested against three requirements — distinct, reachable and durable — plus behavioural and attitudinal profiling, occasion mapping, path-to-purchase work and pricing perception. Instruments are bilingual by design and cognitively tested, because a questionnaire translated into Arabic without testing measures something subtly different from its English original.

GCC sector deep-dives

Market structure and sizing, competitive landscape, regulatory and policy environment, demand-side analysis, route to market, investment activity, and an outlook expressed as scenarios with the assumptions written down so you can stress-test them yourself.

Why Gulf markets need their own approach

A great deal of research done in this region imports frameworks built elsewhere and applies them unchanged. The results look rigorous and predict nothing.

  • Population structure. Nationals plus a large, stratified expatriate majority whose behaviour differs by nationality, tenure, sector and remittance obligation. A sample that ignores this is not representative of anything.
  • Collective decisions. Household purchasing is frequently a group decision rather than an individual one.
  • Seasonal restructuring. Ramadan and the wider calendar reshape entire categories for weeks at a time.
  • Response bias. Social desirability bias is materially stronger here than in the markets most instruments were validated in — and a question asked the wrong way returns a polite answer rather than an accurate one.
  • Inconsistent definitions. A category measured one way in the UAE is often measured differently in Saudi Arabia. We reconcile definitions before reconciling numbers.

How an engagement runs

  1. Framing — converting a business question into a research question, which are rarely the same sentence.
  2. Design — method follows the question; you see and approve the design, including its limitations, before fieldwork begins.
  3. Fieldwork — quality controls specified in advance and reported afterwards, with full disclosure of any deviation from the agreed design.
  4. Analysis — planned before the data lands, so findings are tested rather than fished for.
  5. Synthesis — a deliverable that leads with the decision implication and holds the methodology behind it.

Most engagements run four to ten weeks depending on sample difficulty and method. Where a decision date is fixed we design to it, and we are explicit about what a compressed timeline costs in precision rather than pretending it costs nothing.

What you receive

  • A board-ready synthesis that leads with the implication, not the methodology.
  • An evidence appendix — every material claim traceable to its source, with confidence stated.
  • Data tables and model specifications you keep, in a form you can re-run.
  • An explicit account of what the study could not establish, and what it would take to establish it.
  • A working session with the people who did the research, not an account manager.

That last habit — stating plainly where the evidence runs out — is the same principle behind CitationLab, the education software we build, where an audit that cannot support a conclusion declines to draw one rather than guessing.

Confidentiality

Confidentiality is assumed by default. A large share of this work is commercially sensitive — pricing, M&A support, launch plans — and stays unpublished. NDAs and data-processing agreements are standard, processing is GDPR-compliant and aligned with the UAE’s data-protection framework, and client content is never used to train AI models. Our privacy policy sets out the detail.

Recent published analysis gives a sense of the work: UAE consumer spending trends, GCC healthcare and wellness outlook, and competitive intelligence in Middle East retail. More in Insights.
